Many local businesses have received notice that services they have relied on for many years may be cut due to budget decreases. The city of Birmingham has sent out a four-page letter stating that after 2011, many local business owners will be responsible for the services themselves. Business owners have stated that the decision was made before they were informed and that they feel the services are needed and should still be available to them.

The services include:

Utility Structure Repairs

Snow & Ice Removal

Lawn Mowing

Parking Space Striping

Street Sweeping

Pavement Patching

Pavement Replacement

The merchants say that it could cost them their businesses if they have to replace pavement and do some repairs, and they intend to fight the city on the issue. Several of the businesses have been open for more than 50 years and fists are flying. A meeting is in the works and should happen within the next couple of months.
