City of Santa Clarita Working for Its Youth

Santa Clarita, California - This summer, my children had the opportunity to attend the summer day camp sponsored by the city of Santa Clarita. I had not known about this opportunity until my neighbor told me, and she had heard of it from another neighbor. We were both thrilled to find that the city offers so many incredible opportunities to young people for relatively little to no cost.

During the summer, young people ages 5 through high schools had the opportunity to involve themselves in various arts and crafts, filed trips, games, hands on experiences, and other fun activities at the community center. Some of the trips they took were to the Medieval Times, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and the City's Aquatic Centers. They had incredible time playing games, honing their basketball skills, and meeting new friends. The whole experience made summer seem so short, as they are now heading back to school.

But now to worry. Now that school is resuming, the fun is not ending. The community center is still open on school days from 2pm till 9PM so kids can go for homework help, karate classes, ballet, guitar lessons, boxing, and many more. For a mere $10 a person, your child can take a karate class through the community center from September to December. You can't beat that deal!

This week, the City's Save Our Youth Program will be presenting its Anti-Gang events which are sponsored by the Santa Clarita's Anti-Gang Task Force. On August 19th and august 21st, the City will hold these events at the Boys and Girls Club in Canyon Country (8/19) and in Newhall Community Center (8/21). At this forum, prior gang members and victims of gang violence are scheduled to reveal the results of getting oneself involved in gang.

This is yet another way that the City of Santa Clarita is doing so much to help its youth succeed. The hope of this Save Our Youth event is to give teenagers informative message from first hand sources on the negative consequences of being in gangs. It is intended to deter them from making that decision that could ultimately change the rest of their lives.
For more information or to sign up your kids to attend the Community Center events, call the Community Services Supervisor for Youth Outreach. Her name is Cynthia Llerenas; 661-255-4918. Get involved in your community. Make it better by being a better you!
