Scenes of busses, cars, ambulances, tow trucks and even snow plows were stuck and abandoned on city streets. In a press conference today, Mayor Blumberg promised that all streets would be plowed at least once by 7:00 p.m. this evening the 29th of December and every last one of them done by Thursday morning.
Sad stories continue to filter in regarding emergency services failure to reach troubled New Yorkers. One lady died when the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) could not get to her because the street was blocked with abandoned vehicles and a lady who was in labor delivered her baby girl at home after calling EMS starting at 8:00 a.m. They were unable to reach her until 6:30 p.m. and her baby died in spite of the family's efforts to keep her alive.
Other people had no heat because oil truck deliveries could not get through because streets were not plowed. The mayor did admit that the city flubbed the clean up. Reports to limit calls to 911 unless there was a dire emergency were unheeded. The city has a 311 line for non life threatening problems and both lines were jammed with calls and overworked operators handled 49,000 emergency calls.
According to 1010WINS radio station, as of yesterday there were still 600 city busses stuck on the streets of New York but today the number was reduced to fifty. The local lawmakers are demanding accountability and at a town meeting on January 10, 2011 heads will roll.
By reading the comments sent in to the local news agencies, there are a lot of unhappy people who pay high taxes for these services and demand answers.
