CJ's Southern Cooking recently opened in the hip college town of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Featuring a menu laden with quality Southern specialties, CJ's is perfect for a stick-to-your-ribs home-cooked experience.

Turning a Former KFC into a True Southern Eatery

CJ's Southern Cooking is located on the south side of Yellow Springs on US68 (1535 Xenia Ave.). The owners, Carl Moore and Jim Zehner, refurbished a former Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, and while the fast food ambiance still resonates, the food is now exponentially better.

The fried fish is excellent, with cod, perch, or catfish available as options. The fried cod is lightly breaded and served with french fries and a tasty unique cole slaw; it is arguably CJ's signature item. Fried chicken is another menu specialty.

Various pulled BBQ sandwiches include pork, beef, and chicken. There are also a host of made-to-order dinner entries, including meat loaf, roast beef and turkey, as well as a variety of BBQ ribs. A soup of the day is also on the menu; the corn chowder tasted great, with tender chunks of potato and a generous amount of corn.

A good Southern restaurant is judged by their side items, and CJ's does not disappoint. As stated earlier, the fries and cole slaw are excellent. The mixed greens look intriguing. Fried onion rings are also a highlight. Dessert options include peach cobbler, banana pudding, and sweet potato pie.

CJ's Unique Breakfast Menu

CJ's also serves breakfast, with standard breakfast menu items highlighted by the inclusion of fried bologna and BLT sandwiches. The quiche with fresh fruit, and the Salmon patty with grits and gravy also look interesting.

Yellow Springs residents and folks visiting Antioch College now have another restaurant option in this interesting Southwestern Ohio community. CJ's Southern Cooking is worth a visit for anyone looking for a quality home-cooked meal in the Southern tradition.
