Neighborhood: Clark County

Clark County REMC offers more than just electricity to its members. It also offers valuable community services and is involved with many community organizations.

Incorporated in 1939, the REMC provides electricity to 20,000 members living in Clark, Floyd, Jefferson, Scott and Washington counties and has worked to spur economic growth in their communities. According to their fact sheet, their mission is providing reliable electricity and services to their members, working towards the future, meeting the demands of their members, being good stewards of the environment, and being a good corporate, community citizen.

The REMC and its employees support and are involved with many different community services and activities. They have representation in the Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce, United Way, the Crusade for Children, the American Cancer Association, Leadership Classes, March of Dimes, 4-H Support, little league, and high school sports.

They also offer many programs to their members. Safety is at the top of their priority list, and they offer safety programs and demonstrations to civic and youth organizations.

Ten scholarships to Indiana University Southeast are also available to REMC member's high school seniors. Applications can be picked up in the school guidance counselor's office in January of every year or at the REMC office.

REMC and other Indiana electric cooperatives sponsor both a youth and teacher tour trip for members to Washington D.C. The all expenses paid youth trip is for high school juniors during the summer before their senior year. The trip for teachers is for high school social studies teachers and teaches them how grassroots organizations like the REMC rely on citizen involvement to inform members of Congress about issues. Applications are available through REMC.

REMC also strives to help the elderly and youth in the community. Through the Gatekeeper program, REMC meter readers and line crews keep a watchful eye for unusual events such as mail not being collected and grass growing for long periods of time to make sure that nothing is wrong. Designated a Safe Place, REMC also offers a place for youth to turn in a time of crisis.

REMC is different from an investor owned company. They are a cooperative, and anyone who receives electric services from them are referred to as members. The cooperative is member owned and regardless of financial status, all members have a say in the way the company is run. They have the opportunity to elect another REMC member to serve on the board of directors at a meeting held each year. The board of directors is the legal body that is held accountable for the actions of the organization. by members and the government
