Clark County Library Screens Horror Classics for Halloween Program

With Halloween 2011 fast approaching, the Clark County Library invites locals and tourists in the Las Vegas area to free screenings of horror movies through the library movie series "Tuesday Afternoon at the Bijou: Universal's Horror Classics." These featured black-and-white movies are renowned 1930s horror offerings from Universal Pictures. Aside from taking a look back at the earlier days of the horror genre, these classics may also spark some ideas on what to wear and how to look this coming Halloween. This program is meant for teens, adults, and seniors.

"Dracula" (1931)

On Oct. 4, the library hosts the screening of "Dracula," the vampire horror film that introduced the movie audience to the character Count Dracula, a nobleman living in the Carpathian Mountains in Eastern Europe. Based on the Bram Stoker novel of the same title, the film provides viewers with an original look at cinema's vampiric count which they can compare with the more modern incarnations of this esteemed horror character.

With a screening at the local library, this makes it easily accessible for interested viewers to read more about this legendary icon and even rent out other horror, vampire, or "Dracula" movies in DVD format.

"The Mummy" (1932)

Screening on Oct. 18, the original "The Mummy" explores the story of an archaeological expedition where a mummy and a mystical scroll are discovered inside an Egyptian tomb. One of the members of the expedition reads the scroll aloud, which leads to the resurrection of the ancient Egyptian Imhotep, a man who was buried alive in the tomb from thousands of years back.

After the screening, the audience can also find time for discussions about the movie and historical and cultural topics related to mummification, Egyptian mythology, archaeology, and the real Imhotep in history.

"The Invisible Man" (1933)

"The Invisible Man," an adaptation of the H.G. Wells sci-fi novel of the same title, screens on Oct. 25 for the library's final offering of its 2011 horror classic series. The film tells the story of a scientist who discovers a formula for invisibility while conducting a series of laboratory tests. However, its side effect leads him to insanity and he starts committing murderous acts throughout the countryside.

Capping off the program within a week of Halloween, this creepy classic helps set the mood and feel of the holiday. As a free, practical, and easily accessible venue, the library allows the local community to also check out the film for their own private screenings this Halloween.
