Clash of Two Fathers

My Father's Day Poem

Deonils
I
Four years ago, my dad made his farewell
He was South African, hero through apartheid
But that is about the best there is to tell ...
He loved whiskey lots, yet refused to hate.

II
I celebrate him now; I helped with the last rites
And I thank him for chasing the draw
Of alcohol right out of my tongue and eyes;
He loved a turn of phrase too ... poets and G. B. Shaw.

III
The Commandments remain my guide and hope
The regulations of our Creator are perfectly wise
I have erred as a dad myself; I am, in fact, a sinful dope
Thus I draw nearer to my Lord, Our Father-in-disguise

IV
Parents never fail us; they have one main destiny -
To pass on two sets of genes, maybe some Faith ...
My task and joy is to follow the Father of Eternity,
Who said: hate none, just your life, and thus save it!

V
So this Fathers Day, look not back, but ahead
We have been given this gift of life by mom and dad
What we become is really between us and Godhead
As we honor God, Mother, Dad ... in Truth, divine, not "bad."

  • An honest "obit" for my Dad written in good faith; one or two surprises for Father's Day 2009.
My Dad was a South African, and he never supported apartheid. He was a friend of the African people and spoke Zulu almost perfectly ... brought his friends home, and this is how, I became an anti-apartheid activist.
