Classic 80s Movie Review

No list of classic 80s movie reviews could be complete without a look at Flashdance. Produced in 1983 by Paramount Pictures, it stars Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri. It tells the story of a steel town girl (Jennifer Beals) who is a welder by day but by night trains in an effort to pursue the life of a classical, professional dancer.

This eighties movie review of Flashdance has to mention the most notable scene of the entire movie - the water scene, when water cascades down over the shadowed figure of an erotically posed Alex. You see, Alex is earning money as an exotic dancer to help finance her future career in dancing. HM...is that the boss in the crowd? Another noteworthy scene is when Alex removes the welder's helmet - and you discover that the steel worker is an 18 year old beauty! Kudos to the director and producer of Flashdance for the subtle way this is achieved - various shots of a work clothes clad welder, complete with helmet. Oh, the poignancy of the moment when the helmet comes off and the brunette tresses come tumbling down!

Any movie review of Flashdance would be remiss not to caution the viewer about the crude language, but overall this is a solid chick flick. The romance moves along nicely, there is plenty of dancing and an award-winning song, "More Than a Feeling", plays continually in the background. And of course, this is the movie that launched the fashion trend of torn, baggy, off the shoulder sweatshirts. The trend of the eighties was to place women in masculine roles, to make it look like the so called weaker sex could fare well in traditional male occupations. However, even by today's standards, an attractive teenage girl as a welder is a tough scenario to believe. Grab your popcorn and remote, this is a reasonably night's entertainment.
