Classic 80s Movie Review

The Money Pit, a 1986 comedy film Directed by Richard Benjamin and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, is one of my favorite family classic 80s movie comedy. I was about 9 or 10 when I first watched The Money Pit and I loved it then. Today, twenty something years later, I can watch The Money Pit with more appreciation and understanding of what a homeowner can go through when buying a home, keeping it maintained and paying for it. I can also laugh and be thankful for what I have because no matter how bad my situation is, I am no where near the situation Ana (played by actress Shelley Long) and Walter (played by actor Tom Hanks) are in.

My favorite scene till this day is the kitchen scene when Walter turns on the light switch and an electrical fire starts. It goes around the top part of the doorframe all the way to the outlet, which causes the TV to explode. The fire then continues moving. Walter grabs the bucket of water off the stove and aims it at the fire. This is when I find myself whispering to him! "Don't throw water at an electrical fire!" Luckily he burns himself. The fire keeps burning through the wall, the oven doors explode open and out flies the turkey across the house and yard into the bathroom window and into a bucket on the floor near Ana. Walter comes in and the turkey timer pops out. Ana and Walter so use to the chaos, exchange some words then decide to ignore what just happened. They continue to fill the tub with water. The zinger comes when the tubs fall right through the top floor and shatters into hundreds of pieces downstairs. Then, like any sane man would do when he's had a handful of terrible luck, he begins to laugh loud and insanely. His laugh is so insane, pathetic and contagious I find myself laughing hysterically every time I watch the scene.

This is the kind of comedy there should be more of today. You can watch it over and over with your family without worrying about sexual or grotesque scenes taking over the comedy. It's a clean and funny classic 80s movie people can relate to even today.
