Classic 80s Movie Review: BIG with Tom Hanks

Ann Laczko
"BIG" was a big hit in the 80's. It's one of those movies that you can watch many times throughout your lifetime. Tom Hanks plays Josh Baskin, an early teen, who is frustrated by his inability to get on an amusement park ride because he is too short. Then to add to his humiliation, he's non competitive to get the girl because he can't drive yet. What can Josh do in order to get the things that he wants? Make a wish, of course! There just happens to be a wish machine at the fair and Josh wishes to be BIG! Well, I don't want to spoil all the magic of the movie, but let's just say his wish comes true and the story unfolds.

I can't help but analyze the message of this movie. But, in case you didn't get the same message as me: Pompous, self-centered, jealous people who take advantage of others will fall to their demise. People who are open, honest and genuinely interested in making a contribution to the world will thrive! Hopefully this is a realistic message to kids everywhere! But a kid still needs to be a kid. This movie is rated PG.

Where can you buy this uplifting movie? Amazon.com has new and used DVD's of the movies starting at $5.99. If you still have a VHS, you can buy a used BIG tape for as little as 1 cent plus shipping! There are also many used and new versions available on ebay.com. They have it on DVD, HDVD, Blue Ray, laserdisk, and VHS. And, if you want to find BIG and other 80's stuff...check out www.ilovethe80s.com which leads to ebay for a safe purchase. Or you could rent BIG at Netflix.com. Or if you are a member of columbiahouse.com, you could purchase it on blu-ray.
