Classic 80s Movie Review: Girls Just Want to Have Fun

"That's All They Really Want!"

Looking for a fun 80's movie that will make you want to get up and dance? A perfect movie for a girls' night in front of the TV, the 1985 film Girls Just Want to Have Fun will keep you entertained with its romance, humor, and retro dance moves.

An avid fan of the hit television show "Dance TV," Janey rushes home from her new private school to watch it every day. Her greatest goal is to be a dancer on the show. When she learns of an upcoming dance contest where the winners get to be members of the dance team, Janey decides that she must try out. Unfortunately, her strict military father forbids Janey from participating in the contest. With the help of Lynne, her new best friend, Janey sneaks away from school to compete. But, that's only the beginning of the story. Along the way, Janey meets a good-looking boy who teaches her a different style of dance, a snotty rich girl who thinks she is better than everyone else, and a nerdy teen who always has a new get-rich-quick scheme in the works. In the end, as Janey gets closer to her dreams, she leads others to see that stereotypes are not always accurate.

Filled with a cast of younger versions of today's well-known stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt, and Jonathan Silverman, Girls Just Want to Have Fun will keep viewers entertained from start to finish. Its theme of not sacrificing individuality in order to conform is still relevant to today's teens. Despite being looked down upon, Janey and Lynne learn that it's okay to be different. In the end, despite their differences, they still obtain their desires, which is something that can happen to anyone who is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. Additionally, the hilarious parts will appeal to a new generation of girls who "just want to have fun."
