Classic 80's Movie Reviews: Romancing the Stone (1984)

Starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny Devito

It's tough to find romance, comedy, drama, action & adventure all in one movie, and it is rarer still to find one that is completely successful at integrating all of the above. Romancing the Stone achieves this, though!

The premise of the movie: Lonely romance novelist Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) is drawn into a wild adventure when her sister is kidnapped. She travels to Cartagena, Columbia on a mission to rescue her sister, and in the process meets Jack Colton (Michael Douglas.) Romance and adventure ensue!

The thing I enjoyed most about this movie: watching Joan Wilder transform from frumpy lonesome writer into stunning romantic heroine. I also enjoyed the comedy, which is outstanding. Every scene in this movie is well-thought-out, and it is one that you can watch over and over. In fact, we own this movie, and we've laughed harder with each subsequent viewing.

A bonus: my husband likes Romancing the Stone as much as I do, which is rare considering that we have totally different taste in movies. If you ask me, Romancing the Stone is definitely a keeper. I am delighted to recommend it to others.

This is a great chick flick. You are lucky. There is no way my husband would ever watch this movie, yet alone like it. ;-)

Thanks for the comments, you guys. :) Rebecca, we didn't like the sequel either. Jewel of the Nile gets two thumbs down from this household. CJ, I suspect this movie is popular with female writers; we can all sympathize with the heroine of this story!

This may be a corny movie, but it ranks among my all-time favorite romantic comedies. (^;^) I just loved Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas in this film. The sequel is O.K. but I didn't like it as good as the original movie. I might add, Danny De Vito plays a strong supporting role bringing more humor to both films.
