Classic 80s Movies: "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"

Laugh Your Head Off All Over Again with This 80s Movie Review

Any Eighties Movies Review has to include the movie, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Who can forget the hilarious scene with Ferris and Cameron and the Ferrari? Ferris is talking Cameron into taking his dad's, 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California and the background music is Yello singing, Oh Yeah! Cameron is scared to death while Ferris is innocently sliding into the seat of the revered car telling Cameron they can drive it backwards to take the mileage off. The whole time Yello is cheering them on by singing the words, Oh yeah. It's a hilarious scene that always makes me laugh when I think of it.

I love all of the John Hughes movies and Ferris Bueller was no exception. The movie has several sub-plots to add to the fun. Jeanie, his resentful sister, knows all his schemes but can't understand how Ferris always gets away with everything. Then there is the Dean of Students, Ed Rooney, who knows Ferris is truant. He keeps trying to catch him and always ends up on the short-end no matter what he does. He is attacked by the Bueller's dog which manages to tear up his clothes and he loses his shoe. Then he has to catch a ride home on the school bus because he lost his car keys. To add insult to injury, when he gets on the bus, he steps in bubble-gum and gets hit with a spit-wad in the head. And Mr. & Mrs. Bueller are fooled into thinking Ferris is at home, sick in bed, because he rigs his room with moving blankets on his bed and snoring sounds that come on if anyone tries to open the door.

Other hilarious scenes are when the parking attendants take the Ferrari on a joy ride, Jeanie falls for a drug-dealer and Cameron leans on the car which loosens a wedge. This causes the Ferrari to take off and crash into a ravine. And throughout the movie, Ferris faces into the camera from time to time to tell the audience what is going on. At the end when the credits are rolling, he comes back on the camera and asks the audience why we are still here.

A little known tidbit about the Ferris Bueller's Day Off is that personalized license plates are on most of the cars in the movie. The plates refer to other movies by John Hughes except the Ferrari wich was NRVOUS for nervous. The dad's plate is MMOM for Mr. Mom, the mom's plate is VCTN for National Lampoon Vacation, Jeanie's is TBC for The Breakfast Club and Ed Rooney's was 4FBDO which is For Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Any eighties movie reviews will have Ferris Bueller's Day Off in its list. It is considered one of the funniest comedy movies even beyond the eighties. Fans still talk about the possibility of a sequel. And in 2007, it was rumored that a manuscript for a sequel was floating around Hollywood. We can see it now, Ferris Bueller's Day Off From Work, or Ferris Bueller's Son Takes the Day Off or even, Ed Rooney Tries Again.
