Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Meg Ryan is one of the most memorable classic 80s movies that is packed with romance and adventure. In the role that made him a movie superstar, Tom Cruise stars as Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, an arrogant student fighter pilot. The movie begins in the Persian Gulf when Maverick and Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards, encounter a MiG fighter jet on a routine training session. Maverick is able to successfully fight of the jet by flying his jet upside underneath the MiG startling the MiG pilot with his smile and universally recognized hand gesture. This gutsy maneuver gets Maverick into trouble once again with the Captain, but since he is the most skilled pilot on the ship, he and Goose are selected to attend the top flight school in the Navy.

Maverick and Goose are two of the highly skilled students attending a Fighter Pilot school outside of San Diego who are competing to the be the top fighter pilot. Maverick and Goose's main competition is Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer and Lt. Ron "Slider" Kerner. While out drinking at a bar the evening before the first day of class, Maverick tries to romance a young woman in the bar by belting out of the classic songs from the movie, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling." The next morning Maverick learns that the woman he was hitting on the night before is his flight instructor, Charlie Blackwood played by Kelly McGillis.

Maverick continues to romance Charlie as he and Goose compete with the other pilots in flight maneuver exercises. The rivalry between Maverick and Iceman continues throughout the movie. The students eventually graduate from the elite flight school return to active duty in the Persian Gulf.

Top Gun is an 80s classic movie that also has an equally popular soundtrack including "Take My Breath Away" the movie theme song by Berlin. Other songs featured in the movie are "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins, "Great Balls Of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay" by Otis Redding and the classic "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers.
