The album: Tina Turner: Private Dancer was released on May 29, 1984. I was the first on the line at the music store to buy the album. (No CD's yet). I heard her strong, soulful voice permeate through the radio and go into my soul. It broke my heart. This woman with teased high hair sitting posed on a blanket looking seducitively into the camera. Who was this weird sexy, gorgeous, woman on my album? I asked my parents who she was. and I was a fan.
The female singers in 1985 sang with high squeaky, voices, similar to teenage girls. I loved and still love Cindy Lauper; she has a great voice. She prompted teenage girls just to have fun and learn the heartbreak of first love. However, her voice was too high. Madonna; with not so great a voice; prompted girls with her Minnie Mouse voice on helium to be sluts. Tina Turner's deep sensual voice sounded world-weary, tired. It spoke to teenagers as a "Woman" telling us of love, relationships, and the world. You can feel, hear her sorrow and low self-pity in her song "Private Dancer."
Tina Turner: Private Dancer was not produced by Tina Turner alone, Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits wrote the slow title track. Jeff Beck played solo on "Steel Claw" and Greg Walsh produced Tina Turner's powerful heart-wrenching version of "Let's Stay Together." Rupert Hine produced most of Tina Turner's album as well as writing "What's Love Got To Do With It." I'd like to think that this album was inspired by her newfound freedom from her abusive husband Ike Turner; giving her the impetus to create this dynamic album masterpiece.
Private Dancer is timeless. I had to buy the Compact disc once it was released and I play it non-stop. The transfer is very clean, crisp and clear, bringing it out its powerful and sensual best, 25 years later. I still play my "Private Dancer" album on my stereo record player (Yes, I still have one) when I feel nostalgic. This is an excellent Cd for anyone who is into the 80's retrospective fad. Every teenage girl should be introduced to the "Queen of Rock and Roll" through this 80's classic. They are in for a real treat. You will become a fan.
