Classic '80s Soul Music Review: Jacksons / Victory

Alfonso Coley
During the time of the mid eighties R&B music began to see a new and fresh change of innovative spirit, it ushered in a new revolution of soul and dance music that has become a permanent face of soul music. For most of the revolutionary turn about of the soul music transformation, the Jacksons remained at the forefront of this new evolutionary soul music period. The Victory album was produced in 1984, and gave the Jacksons a new reason to promote their Victory tour.

After the release of the Victory album, the Jacksons set a tour date that would span most every city in the United States; this was their true family uniting victory.

Not only did the Jackson Five emulate pop culture, the group did it in a way that captivated a world audience. This was only the beginning for the Jacksons inception of their Victory album tribute to America.

The album did not feature the Jackson Five as most old school fans knew; instead the Jacksons decided that their new name would be a best fit to accommodate their reuniting with older brother Jermaine Jackson. The Jacksons were not only accomplished singers; they were also trained musicians that were skilled in many musical instruments.

The Victory album represents some of the most poignant songs from an era that represented a quantum of the best that soul music had to offer. Some of the most prolific song that Jackson fans will remember is the haunting beautiful melody Be Not Always produced by Michael Jackson. The Be Not Always lyrics are by Michael Jackson; also the singer composition contributions include strings, arrangement and background vocals.

Jerry Hey also contributed in string arrangements, this musician is from the famous spiritual group Seawind, a group that formed in 1977, and his musical background extends throughout the R&B, jazz and soul music community.

The long overdue duet by Michael Jackson and Mick Jaeger performance of State of Shock was a great addition to the Victory album, the vocals of the two superstars gave more appeal to the Jacksons anticipated world tour.

The Victory album was produced by Epic Records 1984
