Classic 90's Review- Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill

My Review

Joanna Lopez
Music in the 1995 was mainly pop music. We exited from the early 90's cutting edge gangster rap into more studio- produced pop groups like The Spice Girls, New Kids On The Block, Hanson, etc. (Which weren't really that bad; Be honest) We had some diversity in the form of sugar and spice latent songs by Maria Carey and Britney Spears singing pop songs for teenage girls. The music seemed to be turning toward family safe politically correct, catchy pop songs, until Alanis Morissette JAGGED LITTLE PILL. She rewrote rock and brought it back us.

Everyone took notice of this totally pissed off grown woman wearing jeans and a t-shirt, her dirty long dark hair covering her face. She screamed about her boyfriend doing her dirty. She sang about irony, realizing you're in love with your best friend, and having her hands in your pockets. She was edgy, angry, emotional and armed with a guitar. Alanis Morissette didn't just sing angry songs. She also sang songs about optimism, falling in love, being true to yourself and not having to be perfect. Every woman could relate to her. She was cool.

The album Jagged Little Pill was released in June 13, 1995 by the young Maverick label founded by Madonna. It goes without saying what a sensation it was. It was new and different. It was Alanis Morissette and she was going to be heard whether anyone liked it or. "YOU OUGHTA KNOW" is not the only great single in this classic album "Jagged Little Pill." There are many songs to love in this album. I have compiled a summary of all of the songs listed in Alanis Morissette: JAGGED LITTLE PILL:

ALL I REALLY WANT- it is ok. It is not my favorite. It Alanis Morissette asking for an escape from the stress in life and for everyone to think of what really matters in life.

YOU OUGHT TO KNOW- classic song of getting back at your ex who left you for another woman. Or at least said those dreaded words "It's not you. Its me." It's a great angry song about a girlfriend speaking to her ex-boyfriend about the way he treated her.
Great song.

PERFECT-Alanis wrote this about the pressure parents could put on you, anorexia and bulimia.

HAND IN MY POCKET- this is a great song with a catchy chorus. The song is about
being relaxed. To don't get stressed out in life's all or nothing belief. (Anyway, that's what I think)

RIGHT THROUGH YOU- everyone can relate to this song. It is a great song that speaks for itself. Everyone knows a person like this.

FORGIVEN- great song! This song I believe is about tolerance, either religious or social. We are all the same no matter what or whom we believe in.

YOU LEARN- is another great song about the experiences you learn in life. You live. You learn, but don't stop trying. I love this song. It is my mantra.

HEAD OVER FEET- great song. It is about realizing you've fallen in love with your best friend. I love the music, however I feel the words are better than the music.

MARYJANE- this song is about Alanis grieving over a friend who decided to go the wrong way in life. It's ok. It is more personal.

IRONIC- everyone knows this song. It is about the irony in life and how funny it can be.
I love this song. I sing it to myself sometimes when something ironic happens to me.

NOT THE DOCTOR- Alanis's plea to not want to be responsible for someone else's life.

WAKE UP- Alanis plea for people who hate their lives but doesn't do anything to change it. Great song.

YOUR HOUSE-This is a more obscure song by Alanis Morissette where Alanis sings acapella. I don't really like it. It is ok. Give it a listen and see what you think.

YOU OUGHTA KNOW- reprise

There it is! All of the songs from Alanis Morissette's album JAGGED LITTLE PILL. Pull out the CD or download it to listen to it for all times sake. • Alanis Morissette didn't just sing angry songs. She sang songs about optimism and falling in love.
  • In 1995 music was studio produced generic pop music sung by studio produced groups
  • You Oughta Know (Enough said)
It is assumed that actor comedian Dave Coulier from the ABC show "Full House" was the inspiration for the song "You Oughta Know" however in reality Alanis Morissette will not divulge till this day if he is or not.
