Classic Christmas Poetry

Gail Sanders
Wishing you could teach your children some classical Christmas poetry but don't know where to start? I'm fortunate enough to have inherited my mother's 1926 "Book of Knowledge" encyclopedia set which is filled with all sorts of useful information. Included in the index is a list of Christmas poems. From this list I'm including the authors, titles, and first lines for your use. Using this information you can easily do a Google search to find the complete poems online or through your local public library.

"Old Christmas" by Sir Walter Scott
Heap on more wood! -- the wind is chill.
But let it whistle as it will,
We'll keep our Christmas merry still

"Christians, Awake!" by John Byrom
Christian's awake! Salute the happy morn,
Whereon the Saviour of mankind was born.

"Christmas Morning" by Edwin Waugh
Come, all ye weary wanderers,
Beneath the wintry sky;
This day forget your worldly cares
And lay your sorrows by.

"A Hymn on the Nativity of My Saviour" by Ben Jonson
I sing the Birth was born to-night,
The Author both of life and light;
The angels so did sound it.

"Once in Royal David's City" by Mrs. Alexander
Once in royal David's city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a Mother laid her Baby
In a manger for His bed;

"The Birth of Christ" by S.C. Hamerton
Waken, Christian Children!
Up and let us sing,
With glad voice, the praises
Of our new-born King.

"Ring out, Wild Bells" by Lord Tennyson
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

"Good King Wenceslas"
Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about,
Deep and crisp and even.

"A Christmas Carol" by Josiah Gilbert Holland
There's a song in the air!
There's a star in the sky!
There's a mother's deep prayer
And a baby's low cry!

"The Three Kings" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Three Kings came riding from far way,
Melchior and Gaspar and Baltasar;
Three Wise Men out of the East were they,
And they travelled by night and they slept by day,
For their guide was a beautiful, wonderful star.

Blessings!
