Classic Eighties Movie Review : Look Who's Talking

Look Who's Talking (released October 1989) is a hilariously funny comedy film Starring Kirsty Ally as Molly, a thirty-three year old un-married accountant, who gets involved in an affair with a married client ,and gets pregnant. Things go downhill from there as Molly discovers, not only is Albert (her male counter-part ,George Segal) not going to leave his wife for her, as she previously had hoped, but she catches him red-handed in a steamy embrace with another woman.

Molly then goes into labor and hails a cab driven by James (John Travolta) who is extraordinarily funny as he realizes Molly is in labor, and races through the streets of New York City, while at the same time trying to coach her through contractions. The movie gets even funnier when there is confusion at the hospital and James is mistaken for the father.

Olympia Dukasis plays Molly's mom. Molly, not able to tell her mother about her affair, decides it's best to say she has been artificially inseminated. Her mother's reaction to this is one of utter amazement ,and the dialogue is hysterical. She refers to the baby's father as the "Frozen Pop".

Mikey (Bruce Willis) is instantly funny as he bursts onto the scene and jabbers his way through his first five minutes of life. Mikey becomes the sarcastic baby most of us can imagine, analyzing situations as only a child of his age and size can. Molly feeling guilty for "screwing things up" for Mikey, promises to find him "The Best Father there is"

After Molly takes Mikey home, James stops by to return the purse she left in his cab. A few days later she catches him "stealing mail" out of her mailbox, and he confesses to using her address to help get his grandpa into a nursing facility. Molly agrees to help James, and in exchange, James offers to babysit Mikey.

Molly in her quest to find a daddy for Mikey, begins going on a series of dates with dopey guys. The last (a middle aged balding accountant) from her father's firm. James decides a little sabotage is in order, and gives him the dish on Molly's likes and dislikes - which needless to say - does not go well. Molly is so pre-occupied with the business of finding the perfect father for Mikey, that she overlooks her own backyard ...James.

Molly and James end their arrangement when Albert briefly comes back into the picture. Molly quickly realizes her mistake, but it's a bit too late. Until, a call from James grandfathers Nursing Center, brings her and James in the same company again. While in Grandpa's (Abe Vigoda) care, Mikey gets lost, and James and Molly are finally brought together by their mutual distress.

The movie ends with the birth of Mikey's sister Julie, (Joan Rivers) and leads the way for the sequel - Look Who's Talking Too.

Look Who's Talking is a Classic, not only because it is hilarious, it is also sweet, endearing and quirky. It is a great movie that can be enjoyed with the family (Rated PG-13). Some parts are a tad racy, but nothing like the things we see in today's films. The filmmaking is practically flawless with some really great shots that bring Molly's thoughts to life for the audience.
