Classic Music for Relaxation

Amanda Furbeck
You are stressed out, run down, tensed up, and totally frazzled. You are way too busy to slow down but too exhausted to keep going. You're bank account is dwindling and your blood pressure is rising. You just need a break. Truth be told, I cannot fix your bank account (if you saw mine you would understand why!) and I can't fix your blood pressure, clean your house, or walk your dog for you. But I can point the way to music that can help you relax, calm down, and refocus. Maybe this music isn't your first pick or your iPod, but it just might help you clear your mind, boost your mood, and best of all, relax.
Gregorian Chant. Also known as plainchant, this hauntingly beautiful music was first sung by church choirs of men and boys. Although this style was originally attributed to Pope Gregory I, it probably was not created by him. Regardless, the music is peaceful and beautiful. It's better than white noise for creating a comfortable sound-scape for sleeping and relaxing. You can hear the Benedictine Monks of Silos on the album, Gregorian Chant, the Definitive Collection, at amazon.com. Turn the lights down, put your feet up, and let your mind focus on the music.

If you like the peaceful music of Gregorian chants but not the male voices, try Charlotte Church's version or Pie Jesu from Requiem. Her clear tone and innocent voice will hopefully carry you away from your worries, even if only for a few minutes. You can download Charlotte's MP3 from amazon.com as well. Pie Jesus is from the Charlotte Church collection.

A little bit more recently in our musical heritage, you will find soothing melodies by Mozart in his Serenade #10 in Bb, titled, "Gran Partita." According to Kevin Lessman of Gradfree.com, the key of Bb seems to evoke feelings of cheerful love, hope, and aspirations for a better world. Try it out amazon.com. Also, look for Mozart's Piano Concerto in C #21, Elvira Madigan . The key of C brings about feelings of innocence and simplicity, something we all need in our hectic lives.

For relaxation music, listen to the minimalist piano-pop expressions of Ludovico Einaudi . His music is passionate, emotive, and other-worldy. You will find yourself so lost in his art that you forget reality for a bit. You can download his music from iTunes at your leisure.

Hopefully, you can find a few minutes to load up your MP3 player with some beautiful, relaxing music such as listed above. Put your feet up in a dark quiet room, let the music envelope you. Relax and let your soul be soothed.
