Places to Study the Greeks and Romans in Florida

If you live interested in the world of the Greeks and Romans, then you might want to consider pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classics. In addition to teaching you about the languages and cultures of these civilizations, such a degree also allows you to develop skills that will prove helpful in a number of professions. If you are looking for such a program in the state of Florida, then you will want to consider any one of the following institutions.

University of Florida
Students in the Classics Department at the University of Florida have two options in the undergraduate program, one focusing mainly on the Classical languages (Greek and Latin) and the other focusing on the ancient civilizations themselves. The former is designed for those who want to teach Latin or for those who wish to pursue graduate study in one of the ancient languages, while the latter is more suitable for those who simply want a broader humanities background. Although coursework varies for each concentration, students in the Classical Civilizations track are required to attain some proficiency in one or both of the ancient languages.

Florida State University
This particular program is housed in the oldest Department of Classics in the Southeast, and is also home to some of the foremost scholars and teachers in the field. Students that choose this particular institution have a great deal of choice in terms of majors, with course offerings in Archaeology, Classics and Religion, Greek and Latin, and Classical Civilizations, each of which has its own requirements. Undergraduate majors can also partake in a number of extracurricular activities located in the department, including Archaeology Club, Eta Sigma Phi (the national honorary), and the Senior Classical League.

University of Miami
The Classics program at the University of Miami is truly special in that it includes within its study not just Greece and Rome but the many Mediterranean cultures with which it interacted, including Egypt, the Etruscans, and many others. Students in the program can choose from four tracks: Greek, Latin, Greek and Latin, and Classical Civilization, each of which has its own course requirements. There are numerous courses offered, covering the full range of Classical study, including "Self and Other in the Classical World," "Greek Tragedy," and "The Classical Epic Tradition."

Whether you want to continue studying Classics at the graduate level or choose some other field, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Classics can be a tremendously rewarding and enriching endeavor. Any one of these Florida universities can provide you with the necessary tools to ensure that your future efforts are successful.
