Clean Clothes- Are They Really Necessary?

Dealing with the Hated Chore of Laundry

Bob McCoog
We all have our least favorite chores to do around the house, whether it be dishes, mopping the floor, or cleaning the bathroom. However, the chore that should lead the list is doing laundry. Whether you do it every couple of days, every week, or (like someone I knew in college) every month, it is one of the most time consuming processes known to man. Having to sort the clothes by color and then sort them by what temperature they are washed in and the whole drying purpose is a large killer of time. If you through into the mix the process of adding the proper amount of fabric softener and all the other liquids, and doing the laundry is one of the worst household chores of all time. Fortunately, I have recently discovered a process and a product that can both take the pain and some of the annoyance out of doing laundry.

Let us first take a look at the separation process. When you learned about doing laundry as a child, you were shown that you don't wash white clothes with clothes that have colored dyes in them, especially brand new clothes. Then you would have to check the labels and see which ones were labeled to wash warm or to wash cold and separate them even further. This creates multiple piles throughout the house of clothing that each take about twenty to fifty minutes to wash. I've tried doing different things throughout my life in college to speed up this process. However, most of my short cuts have led my to have multiple white-turned-grey shirts and hot pink shirts and dull red boxers. I came upon a better process over the last couple of years, where I've learned that the temperature of the water doesn't really make a difference in laundry. It is actually better for the life of your clothes, as well as better for your electric bill, if your clothes are all washed in cold water. With this discovery, I've been able to limit my multiple piles of clothes down to three piles: colors, whites and jeans, and delicates.

Now, to the actual cleaning process. There is the ritual of pouring in the laundry detergent and then, depending upon the washer, needing to remember when to put the fabric softener in at the right time. This can get to be very frustrating, especially if you have one of the older washers where you have to time the fabric softener pouring at the right time. Fortunately, Purex has created a fantastic item. There are laundry sheets that you use through every single step of the clothes cleaning process. The sheet provides the chemicals for laundry detergent, fabric softener, and also the qualities of a dryer sheet as well. Therefore, you just need to put one of these sheets in when you do laundry and you never have to worry about liquids or timing ever again. A package provides about twenty sheets and goes for about five dollars. This fantastic creation helps take the pain out of doing the laundry to the nth degree.

In conclusion, cold water and Purex have helped to take the pain out of doing the laundry. With these two things, no longer will you have to worry about having millions of piles of separated clothing or about being home to add the fabric softener when needed. Using both of these, all though it doesn't make laundry any more fun, can make the laundry process a lot quicker and less of a time waster.
