Clean Up Clutter and Help Your Community

Teresa Hoyt
You can clean up clutter and have fun doing it by cleaning with a purpose. Everyone wants a cleaner neater home, but it seems like a lot of work and the worst part is you just have to do it over and over again. If you clean up clutter the right way, you will have less clutter to clean up later and every time you need to clean your home.

Clean up clutter by getting rid of it. If you clean up clutter simply by putting it away somewhere, sooner or later it will find its way back out and you will have to clean up same clutter as you did last time. Many items you don't need are recyclable, reusable and make great donations to someone in need. Gather up everything that is in your way and evaluate whether or not you really need it. If the answer is no, toss it out or pass it on. Your clutter may be someone else's treasure.

Start a box for Goodwill, The Salvation Army or another local charity resale shop. Put reusable items that you simply don't want in the box and help someone who needs them. Go through your closet and get rid of anything you do not wear regularly. If it's too big, too small or no longer in style, clean up the clutter and get rid of it. Running shoes that look past donating can be recycled into new running shoes. Visit Nike ReUse a Shoe to find a recycling center near you.

Kids toys, games, books and sports equipment can be donated for resale, or check with your friends and neighbors who have slightly younger children and see if these items would be appreciated. If all else fails, list your items on Craigslist or Freecycle and watch your clutter disappear.

Recycle electronics such as old computers taking up your closet, outdated cell phones and old TV's. Check out e-Cycling Central for a list of locations that will recycle your old electronics. Big clunky computers have no place in your closet or basement. When you quit using it, a computer becomes clutter. Old printers, scanners, fax machines (you still have one of these dinosaurs?) and phones are not old enough to be museum pieces but plenty old enough to be clutter.

Clean up the clutter by making a game of finding as many items as possible to donate or recycle. Put any real trash in the appropriate recycling bin and give away the rest. Cleaning up the clutter is fun when you think about helping people, giving things to someone who needs them and recycling materials to be made into something new.
