Clean Green with Seventh Generation Shower Cleaner

This Green Cleaner is a Safer, More Earth Friendly Alternative to Toxic Cleaning Products

Julia Williams
If you use conventional household cleaners to tackle grungy soap scum, mold and mildew in your bathroom, you expose yourself to countless chemicals that could be detrimental to your health. While there is some debate about just how harmful these chemicals are to humans when used sparingly and with good ventilation, there's no refuting that they contribute to environmental problems such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, aquatic toxicity and air pollution.

Thankfully, earth friendly alternatives do exist, such as those made by Seventh Generation. Although the "green cleaner" concept might seem to be a relatively new one, it's really not. Scientists and environmentally conscious companies have been working to develop green cleaning products for more than 50 years. And Seventh Generation has offered consumers a wide variety of great ways to clean green for several decades.

This Vermont-based, earth friendly company takes the green cleaner concept seriously. Seventh Generation company guidelines stipulate that ingredients in any green cleaner they sell cannot be toxic to the user either immediately or long-term. Additionally, the green cleaner can't contribute to environmental problems like those I mentioned earlier.

I've been using Seventh Generation products to clean green (and live green) for many years. The Seventh Generation Shower Cleaner is specifically formulated to remove and prevent soap scum buildup and stains caused by mold and mildew. This chlorine free green cleaner is non-toxic and biodegradable, and contains no petroleum based solvents, phosphates, acids glycol ethers, caustics and dyes.

The Seventh Generation Shower Cleaner is scented with a natural citrus fragrance so there are no unpleasant fumes to inhale. It smells quite nice actually, like you've just hand peeled and juiced a bunch of oranges. The active cleaning agent is hydrogen peroxide, which means you can use it right before you take your shower and not worry about breathing in chlorine and other noxious fumes. Unlike many conventional shower cleaning products, the Seventh Generation green cleaner does not leave harmful residues.

Although the Seventh Generation Shower Cleaner can be used for thorough cleaning, it will take more elbow grease to clean a really grimy bathtub or shower. I've found that this somewhat mild green gleaner works better for daily maintenance to prevent buildup than it does for major cleaning. In other words, if you don't let the dirt build up for weeks, it works well to keep your shower sparkling clean and smelling fresh.

The Seventh Generation Shower Cleaner ingredients are: hydrogen peroxide (the active stain removal agent), biodegradable surfactants (for soil removal), citrus oil (for grease removal), food-grade, non-toxic oxygen stabilizers (to help the hydrogen peroxide last longer) and water.

In addition to their extensive line of phosphate-free green cleaning products, Seventh Generation offers non-chlorine bleached, 100% recycled paper towels, napkins, toilet paper and facial tissues. For parents, Seventh Generation offers chlorine-free diapers, baby wipes and training pants.

Green cleaning products may cost a bit more, but I believe the benefits to my health and the earth friendly aspect make them worth it in the long run. If you want a good green cleaner for the bathroom, Seventh Generation is a great choice.
