Clean Your Registry If Your Computer is Slow or Freezing

Greg Smith
Nothing in all of pc land is more frustrating that having a computer that runs slowly or freezes on you. Not only are you wasting valuable time (and time is money), it also takes you attention away from what you were trying to accomplish in the first place.

Remember when your computer was brand new? It started fast and worked at the speed of light. It ran smooth without any glitches. So what is it that can cause all of the problems you're getting now?

One problem could be your registry is filled with unnecessary junk. When your computer's OS (operating system) runs it has to go through your registry to and pick its way around the tons of excess stuff lodged in there. There are tiny pieces of programs that should have been removed but weren't. Programs that should have been completely uninstalled were not and programs that should have been installed never entirely were. And you could also have spyware using your computer unknowingly for it's own malicious purposes.

So what exactly is a computer registry? A registry is a bank of data information that the operating system uses to run the computer and run the commands you give to it. When it becomes bloated, your computer can come to a slow crawl or crashing halt.

What can you do to correct this? You have to give your registry a good cleaning and remove any unused or useless data fragments that are in no way productive to the running of your computer. This can be done manually by manually but hitting START>RUN and typing in REGEDIT.

This is dangerous because the average computer user doesn't know what to remove and could remove the wrong component. This could disable your computer. On a smaller scale you may disable some parts of programs that will not allow them to work.

A second option is to use a registry cleaning application. Registry cleaning applications can be purchased online or at local stores. Registry cleaning applications will go through your registry and clean unwanted material while leaving your necessary material alone.

An effective registry cleaning application will back up your registry at the beginning, so if you need to you can restore you computer to it's state in the beginning. After it completes its backup, it will then go and remove files, fragments, unused drivers and other materials that can cause an unhealthy computer.

If you're looking for a way to get under the hood of your computer and speed things up, a registry cleaning application is the way to go.
