Cleaning the Glass Tops on Your Aquarium

Shannon Frye
When you have a fish tank you will probably have some type of glass lid. Sometimes there will be glass in the middle of the black plastic lid and something you will have glass tops on your fish tank. If you ever break your lid you will need to purchase glass tops which you can get from any local pet store such as Petco. They are not that hard to find and they make them in a wide variety of sizes. No matter what size tank that you have, you will be able to purchase a replacement lid for the tank.

Cleaning the tops is very easy to do. You will want to lift one piece of glass off of the tank at a time. When you lift the first section of glass you will want to hold it straight up and down so that the water can run off of the glass top. You will want to take the top over and place it on the counter in your kitchen. You will then want to grab the other glass top and do the same thing to it. Then you can take the glass top over and place it on the counter as well. It's easiest to clean your sink if you have rubber mats in the sink. This way you will not scratch the sink or break your glass tops.

You want to be careful when you are cleaning the glass tops. You don't want to flip them over and crack the top on the faucet or side of the sink. Take your time when you clean the glass top so that you do not break the top. You will need to find yourself a razor blade to clean off the glass top. You can also use a scraper or scrub brush if you would like to but it will not get the water buildup off of the glass top. If you use a razor blade you can make the glass look like brand new. Don't place the razor blade in your fish tank or your fish will get metal poisoning.

Now you will want to use the razor blade to gently scrape all of the deposits off of the glass lid. You can even pull the glass pieces apart and clean them as well. You can slide the handle off and clean that area if you would like to. Using a razor is the easiest way to clean the glass lids on the top of your fish tank. You can make your glass tops look like brand new if you use a razor on the lids. Be careful that you don't break the lids because they are expensive to purchase replacements and they are somewhat hard to find if you have an odd aquarium size.
