Cleaning the Rocks in Your Freshwater FishTank

Shannon Frye
Most people have rock in their freshwater tanks. If you want to clean the rock you are going to need to purchase a siphon tube from your local pet store. You will need to purchase a siphon tube which has what looks like a grid on the front, so that you do not suck up any fish into the siphon tube. You can suck a fish down the tube and then the fish will get organ failure. Make sure that you purchase a tube which you cannot suck up a fish with or you will probably suck up a few fish in your lifetime.

Once you have the siphon tube you will need to find a bucket. You will want to use the siphon tube to clean the water in your fish tank. There are two ways to do this. You can suck on the end of the siphon tube to get the flow going or you can do it by hand.

You will want to cover the end of the siphon tube and then place the suction part of the siphon tube in the water. You will want to get a scoop full of water and raise it above the water. You will want to unplug the other end of the tube for about half of a second to let the air out of the tube. Then you will place the suction part back into the water and let go of the other end of the tube. It will automatically start to suction the water down the tube.

You will want to make sure that the water is going into the bucket. You don't want to flood the entire room. Keep an eye on the water level in the bucket as you clean the rock. You will want to move all of the decorations around in your tank.

The first time you clean the rock you will want to clean the entire rock. You will switch all decorations from one side to another to clean all of the rock on each side. You still need to keep an eye on the water level to make sure that you are over flowing the bucket.

The next time that you clean the rock you will want to pick either the left or right side of the rock. You will want to remember which side that you clean because the next cleaning you will need to clean the other side. You will switch between the sides each time that you clean your rock. You don't want to clean the entire amount of rock because you will ruin the beneficial bacteria colony in the fish tank. When you are done you can take the decorations and place them back into the fish tank.

I have 4 Gouramis, a really big white goldfish, a Plecostomus 10 years old, and a 1 year old typical goldfish...they seem to get along as long as I separate them every once in awhile...big goldfish gets dominant and I have to separate him from the rest of the tank. Should I do that as punishment or just get another tank?
