Clear the Clutter! Make the Most of Your Work Space

Have an Orderly, Neat and Clean Work Space

Janet Hunt
Having an orderly, neat and clean work space can make the difference between having a productive day or having an unproductive day. This is true whether you work in an office at a nine-to-five job or whether your business is a home-based one, such as freelance writing.

The time you waste shuffling through papers looking for your current project could have been better spent completing it! Take some time now to clean up that work area and you will find your workday flowing on a much smoother pace. Here are several tips to get you started towards producing a more effective work space including organizing, purging and re-organizing.

Organizing

Efficient and effective organizing is the key to having an orderly and productive work space. Arrange your projects in a way where they will be most accessible to you when you need them. This could be alphabetically, chronologically (most recent projects first), or some other filing system relevant to your business. Make sure you are consistent in arranging your work, so you will have no problem laying your hands on important paperwork when it is most needed.

Purging

Purging is essential to keep your workflow manageable and up-to-date. Not only is it efficient to throw out those 12-year-old advertisements that you will never use, which are also no longer relevant; it also feels very good! Purging, throwing away all those unused and unnecessary papers that we have managed to accumulate over the years is somehow freeing. Try it! Just doing it makes you feel energized and ready to go to work.

Re-organizing

Many of us spend long hours re-organizing or redecorating our homes. Why not spend some of this time on our workspace? Most people spend a large portion of their day at their work station. Make it as attractive and comfortable as possible, giving special attention to your chair. An uncomfortable chair will not lend itself to increasing your productivity. With a little creative re-organizing, your work attitude will improve and perhaps you will no longer dread starting your work day.

Excellent stuff here. Yeah, my wife's always on my case about my LIGHTLY cluttered studio, esp. the couch that holds up all my unfinished work (but hey, I have seen FAR worse, believe me)!
