Clermont: The Hilliest Place in Florida

Linda Stamberger
Clermont is located in central Florida in Lake County, twenty-five miles west of Orlando. Clermont is accessible by West Highway 50. Clermont is refreshingly out-of-place in Floridian geography - not literally, but in observation. For when one travels through Clermont, it's as if they were in a different state, most notably, Pennsylvania. The area looks surprisingly Lancaster Dutch, with beautiful green, rolling hills, expansive land and a multitude of freshwater lakes - the only giveaway to a central Floridian landscape.

Florida is generally known for its swamp lands and flat terrain, yet Clermont is known as "The Gem of the Hills". This is home to the Florida Citrus Tower, a fifty-six year old landmark, and Lakeridge Winery. Florida is known for its citrus trade, but a special hybrid grape flourishes in Clermont at the winery where the warm, humid climate and sandy surface layers of soil produce some juicy grapes. Lakeridge Winery is Florida's largest winery, which produces quality reds and whites of assorted flavor, all kissed by the Florida sun.

Clermont has some of the highest of altitudes in all of central Florida. The historic business district is found by taking Highway 27 to FL 50. Turn right on West Avenue and right again on West Montrose St. Shops and businesses change, but in the historic district, one can find the Mulberry Inn, a lovely restored vintage house, which consists of a breakfast, bakery , gift and antique shop. The historic district remains in the past, with its wonderful vintage architecture and mom and pop shops. Many people flock to Clermont during the season to visit the winery, and old sections of town. There is also a huge mall built off the main highway that has opened up this sleepy suburb, yet compared to Orlando, it remains surprisingly rural. The expanse of land and hilly atmosphere add to the charm, scenery and overall peaceful vibe this town provides. Many residents who work in Orlando choose to live in Clermont, due to the fresh air, lower population and less industry.

Clermont is also close to Leesburg, which remains old Floridian, with a historic district that includes a vintage 1950's restored movie theatre, antiques district, big antique mall, and close access to I-75 and other small, historic Florida towns within route to Highway 50, Highway 27, Highway 17 and Route 70. These routes have towns and areas that are near the antique loop, or triangle. The towns within the loop include Lake Placid, Arcadia, Winter Haven, Lake Alfred, Lake Wales and Avon Park. Its easy to get around with all the different access points, and there are thousands of people per year that visit these small towns from all over Florida, Georgia, other states and Europe as well.
