Construction is everywhere. Tennessee's road budget must have more money than they know what to do with. There is ongoing road construction on Highway 411 from Delano south to the Georgia border. Highway 64 from the Bradley Countyborder to the Ocoee River has been under construction for what seems like two or more years. There will be road improvements at Exit 20 of I-75 to help the flow of traffic. Yes, Cleveland, Tennessee is growing by leaps and bounds and we need improved roads to get the residents and tourists in, out and around better.

When the news of the Volkswagen plant hit, expectations were high. Although Volkswagen isn't in our backyard, their employees have moved into our neighborhoods, and that's wonderful. They are bringing new businesses, new people, new customers, new home buyers, and new sources of profits as well as new headaches this way. We were also warned that the increase in population would lead to the need for new schools, more law enforcement protection and the traffic would become worse.

It is not just Volkswagen and their growth; there is a lot more growth in Cleveland from other businesses as well. Westinghouse is moving and enlarging their facility and their workforce. We obviously need more schools and more outdoor space for the current and future residents of our county.

Parkview Elementary School, on Minnis Road, opened in September and the land near the school is currently under construction. According to the Cleveland Daily Banner, that area will become an upscale recreational complex. Site work alone for the project, which began recently, is expected to cost around $600,000. When completed there will be several soccer fields, adult softball fields, a playground, walking trails and a fishing lake. I can only imagine the traffic that will bring to that area. One of Cleveland's high schools is being added onto and updated. We are bursting at the seams and spreading further into the country at a rapid rate. There is still a lot of farmland available, but someday that will dwindle also.

Next on the agenda is another new elementary school, which will be up for vote shortly. It is expected that the land for a new school will cost anywhere from $850,000 to over $1.2 and construction costs will reach the neighborhood of $13 million. Furniture, computers and other odds and ends will be around $252,000. It seems the debate centers around when to buy land and when to build. There is no time like the present to buy land.

We are growing by leaps and bounds and the City of Cleveland and Bradley County, Tennessee doesn't need to play catch-up, we need to be one step ahead of the game and well prepared for the future.
