Clients, Not Customers; Guests, Not Visitors

A Lesson from Mickey and Minnie

David Jones
Why would changing how you call your customers make a difference in your sales. The subtle change can make a big difference. Stop using the word customer and start using "client." Stop using the word visitor and use the word "guest."

Changing the words just a little can help you put more importance on the person. Drill your employees like the Disney theme parks do. Teach them that every one who calls you or comes into your store is a client or guest. Treat them with the respect that you would a guest in your home. Make them feel comfortable and help them be happy just as you would if they were sitting in your home.

Do What You Do So Well That People Cannot Resist Telling Others About You!

How many times have you heard someone talk about their visit to Disneyland. Everyone talks about this trip. They talk about the cleanliness of the park and the incredible rides and shows. They talk about how efficient the hosts were and how courteous the employees were. Many of them even mention how smoothly the parking lot is run.

All of this word of mouth praise is unprovoked, unsolicited and is never compensated. How would you like everyone talking about you like that?

Change the way you address your clients. Make it a big deal to your associates and make it a big deal to the people around you. This will change how you see your clients and guests. You will respect them more and they will respect you more. Remember your clients are your biggest asset.

Clients are more important than customers and guests are treated with much more respect than foot traffic. Make this important distinction an important part of your training with new associates and help your current associates and yourself to raise the respect you have of all your clients.

Make them important in all that you do and they will make you important in all that you do.

I find it very patronizing and irritating when I go to the bank, post office, DMV etc. and am called their GUEST. I am not their GUEST. I am their customer. Spare your CUSTOMERS the insipid PC euphemisms please.

Mary Kay Ashe has taken this concept to the multi-million dollar level. If we would all just treat our fellow man as we wish to be treated the world would be a much better place. Thank you fer sharin' these insights ;-}}>

Remember the saying...something about bad news is forever...

Good news, well...The Best advertising is passed "word of mouth."
So this being true, Bad news goes the same route but picks up speed really fast.

The Disney thing reference is true, and look where it got him?
