The peanut butter recall is due to peanut paste that was manufactured by the PCA (Peanut Corporation of America) and has been identified as being contaminated with Salmonella. Currently, the Outbreak has reached 43 states, caused over 470 illnesses, and resulted in six deaths.
Salmonella symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, stomach pains and cramps, fevers, and general malaise. In healthy individuals, it tends to subside within a week, but for those with weakened, immune systems, young infants, and the elderly it can be more serious. Since nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are associated with the illness, dehydration is cause for concern. Additionally, there are several complications that can occur, resulting in other illnesses. This typically occurs when the Salmonella bacteria spreads and infects the bloodstream. Therefore, it is imperative that anyone who suspects that they might have Salmonella poisoning to contact their health care provider immediately.
If you have any of the above recalled Clif Bars, you are advised to discard them immediately, it's important to realize that the dates that are listed are the only ones involved with the recall. Though you should discard the Clif Bars themselves, you will need to keep the Best by/ Sell by date in order to claim your refund.
The Clif Bar and Company has set up a consumer hotline where consumers may call and ask any questions that they might have. You can reach the number by calling 1 (800) Clifbar or 1 (800) 2543227.
The current Peanut Butter Salmonella recall has reached many companies. Though the Peanut Corporation of America does not sell directly to the consumer, they sell to companies that use their products in their manufacturing. The FDA is currently advising consumers to stay clear of products that have peanut butter as an added ingredient.
