Cliff Lee to Sign with Phillies; Yankees Caught Looking

Darren Pare
Baseball's longest soap opera has finally come to an end. Free agent Cliff Lee has decided to make a return visit to the Philadelphia Phillies, spurning offers by the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. Reports have Lee's new contract at 5 years and $120 million. That would be quite a bit lower than the rumored 7 year and $150 million deal the Yankees offered.

While Phillies fans are rejoicing, Yankees fans are left to wonder what went wrong. The Yankees have been unable to come up with anything in the free agent market this off season. While they wasted weeks courting Lee, other prized free agents such as Jayson Werth, Victor Martinez, and Carl Crawford got signed by other teams.

Now the Yankees are left to dig through the scrap heap of remaining free agents. The best starting pitcher left on the market is Carl Pavano, a mistake the Yankees will not make again. While the best position player left is third baseman Adrian Beltre, a player the can't use because Alex Rodriguez currently plays third. There have also been rumors that the Yankees have talked to the Kansas City Royals about acquiring Zack Greinke, but that is a huge gamble with Greinke's anxiety disorder.

Unless Yankees general manager, Brian Cashman, can work some trade magic, this offseason will be a complete failure. The team put all their eggs in the Cliff Lee basket and lost. They will first have to go down to Texas and beg Andy Pettitte not to retire and then see who is available on the trade market. The New York press will rake Cashman over the coals for his performance this offseason, and for once he will definitely deserve it. The Boston Red Sox have improved themselves by adding Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, while the Yankees sat around and got nothing. As a Yankees fan that is just unacceptable. Cashman needs to make a big recovery or maybe it will be time to show him the door.

As a Red Sox fan I can sympathize with fans of the Evil Empire - but I also have trouble resisting the urge to say "How does it feel?".
Regardless - the Yankees will still put the same team on the field that had the third best record in baseball last year...nothing to scoff at.
