Clint Eastwood: He Makes Our Day

Mary Thatcher
Clint Eastwood recently celebrated his 80th birthday last week on May 31, but despite his age (not to mention his still being sharp and of course, successful political career), he still has the charisma that makes him so appealing as a popular culture icon. Best known for his portrayal of tough guys in films like "The Enforcer" and "Magnum Force", Clint managed to acquire a strong following of fans both male and female even though he is best known as a "man's man" with his screen image. Yet he is handsome enough to attract women who like strong men. That film poster for "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" could very well be on the bedroom wall of a young lady who has a crush on Joe, the character he plays in this well known Spaghetti Western. It's hard to not notice Clint's masculinity, especially if one is a woman. Life reports a photo layout of Clint that documents his career and private moments in a number of unsuspecting places. A hot pose at the beach, in the woods, chopping wood, or standing near horses is included in the layout. These are the kind of photos that belong framed hanging on the wall in the bedroom of a young lady, or a teenage boy who idolizes Clint.

I remember seeing Clint in his early years as a guest star on "Mister Ed" in the episode aptly titled "Clint Eastwood Meets Mister Ed", first televised in 1962. That year saw Clint's success on "Rawhide", a western that ran from 1959 to 1965. The best words to describe Clint on "Mister Ed" was well off of the hotness scale. If there was ever an actor to make a cameo appearance on a television show beside a horse, Clint was more than perfect for that purpose.

In 1971 Clint made the cover of Life magazine as being the world's favorite movie star. That's a tough one to beat, and Clint himself is a tough act to follow. He has more wanna-be tough guy actors looking up to him rather than trying to just imitate him. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but the truth is, most of today's Hollywood male stars don't come anywhere near close to Clint Eastwood. There is one thing to be said about Clint Eastwood: the man really does make our day.
