Clinton Hill's Pratt Gets $1 Milllion for Textbook Rentals

Good news, Clinton Hill. A college education just became more affordable at the Pratt Institute thanks to Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY).

Schumer has been fighting for students to rent, rather than purchase, textbooks, according to his website. Yay! Schumer is winning the fight. Pratt just received $991,300 for a textbook rental program, reports the Brooklyn Eagle. This federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education will help to make college more affordable for Pratt's students, 75 percent of whom receive financial aid. Books that cost over $900 a year to purchase will only cost $130 to $240 a year to rent, reports the newspaper. The entire program has nearly $10 million; Schumer plans to expand it to other New York schools, according to his website.

If your school doesn't have the program yet, check websites such as Amazon and Half.com for used books. Barnes & Noble on 18th Street in Manhattan also sells used textbooks. And if you get lucky, you might find some good deals at the Strand. (Its selection is limited.) Used books are not as affordable as rentals, but every little bit helps.

Till next time, Clinton Hill.

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile
