Clinton Impeachment Curse Continues: Maria Shriver Leaving GOP Icon Arnold Schwarzenegger Amid Claims of Infidelity

Timothy Sexton
The Congress that was controlled by the Republicans during the late '90s forwarded themselves as leading the charge to bring back family values into a political arena tainted by President Clinton's dalliance with Monica Lewinsky. So outraged were these beacons of ethical behavior that they took it upon themselves to impeach President Clinton for reasons related to this private affair.

How times have changed. With Republican politicians from Newt Gingrich to John Ensign engulfed in scandals of infidelity that makes the Lewinsky Affair look like a story suitable for an Afterschool Special, the GOP has had a very hard time proving that their assault against the infidelity of President Clinton was not one of the all time great cases of political hypocrisy. Now comes word from Maria Shriver that one of the reasons she is seeking a divorce from her husband and former GOP Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is that she has become fed up with his string of infidelities.

Of course, you may be confused by this announcement if your memory can take you back to the days of 2003 when Arnold was running for Governor amid what seemed to be a new allegation of sexual misconduct against him every day. "I have met thousands and thousands of women who have come up to me and said they have worked with him, they have worked for him, alongside, and he has been an extraordinary gentleman."

That appraisal seems to have vanished along with confidence in male Republican politicians not to do the very same thing for which their party impeached Clinton. The announcement of a marital split between the star of such movies as "Twins" and "Conan the Barbarian" and a member of the most famous American family of liberal politicians, or as liberal as an American politician can be, comes with news that Maria Shriver has contemplated leaving her husband several times before. That decision was twice trumped by a death of a parent. With no parents left to toss off their mortal coil, the decision to leave seems likely to go through to its logical destination this time.

Since Arnold left the Governor's Mansion in 2010, rumors have been swirling around the choice he will decide on as his pony bringing him back into show business. The rumors have ranged from sequels to past hits like "True Lies" and "The Terminator" to an animated show titled "The Governator."

One project you can pretty much guarantee that Schwarzenegger won't be involved in any time soon is a film based on the impeachment of President Clinton by his Republican cohorts.
