You have recently brought home your baby and are learning your new parenting groove. Clipping baby nails is often terrifying for most new parents. How does a parent clip baby fingernails and toenails without harming their baby? There are a several popular methods and tips to clipping baby nails that will keep baby and parents tear-free. I assure you that you will find one that is painless for you and your baby.

Trim baby nails by nail file

Recommended by many pediatricians, is to simply file away baby nails by nail file. Newborn nails are naturally sharp. Keep your newborn's face unscathed by filing down their fingernails and toenails with a nail file.

Trim baby nails by baby nail clipper

Clipping baby nails with miniature nail clippers can be challenging. Newborns tend to clench their fist tightening the gap between the fingertip and nail.

Try trimming baby's nails while he sleeps. Clipping baby nails while the baby is relaxed is one of the easiest and quickest methods.

If you choose to trim baby nails while baby is awake, try to remain relaxed. Gently push back the fingertip from the nail to allow space for the nail clipper. This will help prevent clipping your baby's finger. Short little clips above the white nail line will help prevent clipping to close.

Remember baby toenails should be clipped straight across.

Trim baby nails while baby is distracted

Often clipping baby nails is easier if the baby is distracted. Try clipping baby nails while a family member sits in front of baby. Your baby will love the extra attention given by a loved one while his nails are receiving a trim.

Try taking your baby outdoors in the morning while birds are chirping. Your baby will love listening to new sounds as he is getting his nails trimmed. In addition, he will love seeing his new surroundings.

Ask a grandparent

If you are feeling really uneasy about clipping your baby's nails for the first time try asking a grandparent to assist you. They can show you or guide you through your first time. In addition, they can offer you some encouragement.

Talk with a pediatrician

You can further talk with your baby's pediatrician for nail clipping advice. Nail clipping is a popular concern from parents. A pediatrician can provide answers to any other questions you may have about trimming your baby's nails.

Baby mittens

Baby mittens are a great solution for newborn babies. These mittens will help prevent the baby from scratching his face. Baby nails shouldn't get excessively long, but mittens work suitably between nail trimmings.

Remember to relax. You can play soothing music to help calm the both of you. You don't have to finish trimming all of your baby's nails in one setting if it becomes too difficult for the both of you. Just pick up where you left off when you get the opportunity.

I wondered if you could just file their nails. When I have kids, that will be my greatest fear, clipping their nails. I'm sure I could handle filing

I would be scared too! But I am surprised when I see babies with long fingernails. So it really is important to trim their nails so that they don't scratch themselves.

We have never forgotten that in 1969 when our first son was born and was a week old-my husband was so terrified of us cutting our son's nails that he went out and paid $10 for a pair of pediatric nail scissors-probably the same thing as you get at the hospital all the time now and that $10 then would proabably be $50-60 today!

I never again used a clipper after I accidentally nipped my daughter's thumb. :( I always bit my son's nails off while he was nursing.
