Cloning Endangered & Extinct Animals

Melissa B
Each year it seems like more and more animals are on the brink of extinction. We face the very real danger of loosing a piece of this planet, our history in such a way that we will never be able to get it back except from the pages of story books. Animals that once seemed real will fade into memories, and into myth.

Animals which are needed in their areas for ecological balance. It is because of that fact, among others, that these animals need to be saved. With human expansion and (needed or not) exploitation of them, and their natural habitats, these animals are dying off.

However, with the miracles of science exploding new possibilities upon us each and every day, there may be a new way to possibly save, or even bring back these animals!

Dolly, the sheep, opened the door with the amazing technology of cloning. A tool which may now be used to possibly restore these endangered animals.

When you think of animal cloning, a certain movie(s) featuring dinosaurs may come to mind, but in reality, it probably wouldn't work like that.

Animals which would be available for cloning would need to have been frozen right after death, or have been dead no longer than five days. Not leaving much of a chance for many of the (especially in warm climates) animals that have long since passed on. That does however, leave the door open for animals that are in very real danger of extinction in the near future (extinct animal).

The problem with cloning these animals aren't small issues, these animals (again, as with Dolly) are weaker and more sickly than their original counterparts. It's also difficult to find a carrier for the cloned animal that'd be able to carry it to term, or at all

Cloning in it's self is a very controversial issue, and it will no doubt raise it's own issues, although there is a strong, moral argument in this instance. Something which has been hailed as one of the 'positive' outcomes of this technology.

Aside from these issues, there is also other programs and funding to consider. Will people be more likely to see this as a sort of 'quick fix,' and not be as willing to donate or work with other programs? Programs that are in place already to help preserve these animals, and prevent extinction (washington post).

The hope is there and exciting that there is a possibility that cloning endangered, or perhaps even extinct animals will become a reality some time in the future! Scientists are already putting the wheels in motion to make this a possibility if not now, in the future, making sure that the materials are available when future improvements are made.

It's wonderful to think about all the animals that might once again flourish if cloning these exotic, endangered animals were made a reality, and not science fiction!

The only reason, whatsover, that an animal should be cloned is to avoid extinction. Cloning humans, though fascinating to some, is not neccessary and would cause plenty of conflicts in the future. Cloning animals for food is also not neccessary in any way besides making money. Companies who clone their livestock only do it to get higher yields of their products in order to satisfy their greed. People are perfectly doing perfectly fine with original food and should not need "special foods." It has never been needed before and should not be needed now. Unless there is a shortage of food, then cloning livestock shoulb be avoided. Endangered animals are the only ones who should benefit from cloning.

btw that last comment was directed at natasha.

anywho i think half of the controversy surrounding cloning is the fact that when cloning is 100% successful, it would completely erradicate the need for males of a a species, because females can clone themselves, however men can not clone themselves without a female.

    wtf!?
you obviously don't know much about cloning at all.
yes. it would be a good way of saving animals that are near extinction, or endangered etc once it is perfected. Yea, it is kinda hard, and expensive though, as well as not legal in america.
And no, cloning would NOT let you design your children and grandchildren, or anything. cloning would allow you to make an exact copy of yourself; if you had a clone child they would look exactly like the person they were cloned from, and have exactly the same dna.
custom-made babies would have to do with dna/gene manipulation. We would need to be able to locate particular genes in the dna and extract them, and then custom-build dna, and then fertilize in-vitro. when we know more about dna and which gene does what, then we can make designer babies. They have already started begining to do this with food and animals, to make food bigger or survive better etc. so designer babies aren't too far away in the future, i'm sure. Plus, you can al

    Scientist need to clone more.

Its is very resonable for scientist to clone animals for food. you can get more benefits out of it.

i think that if scientist could find out for sure how to clone an animals we could be able to save a lot of animals.
I don't think that cloning is very hard. We would be able to not only save animals but live too. Cloning could be the greatest technologies of them all. We could even design ou children and grandchildren. We could even tell how much vitamins a carrot has and doesnt have. This would be a miracle. Think about it. If you are a cute guy call me if you are not back off. my number is 1800natasha.
    I will be waiting. if you know what i mean. :) :) : )
