Cloning Endangered Species Vs. Extinction, Which Wins Out?

Scott Schlimmer
Extinction is Bad

Generally, we think it bad when humans cause extinction. The dodo bird has become famously extinct, and people seem very saddened when animal species make the endangered species list. Generally today, we go out of our way to protect the endangered species form going extinct.

Cloning is Bad

We also seem to oppose cloning. Religious groups oppose cloning, claiming that humans shouldn't play God. Others simply believe it's not our place to duplicate another creature. We even seem to oppose using stem cells to heal humans.

What Gives?

So I'd like to pit these two wrongs up against each other. Which wins out? For now, let's ignore whether cloning is possible or successful currently. Let's assume that one day cloning will be perfected. When cloning is perfected, which wins out? Cloning or extinction?

For an endangered species, is it appropriate to use cloning to offset human caused extinction?

Cloning is wrong. Making species go extinct is wrong. Which wins out?

cloning is bad but extincion is a huge problem happening in the world. so i believe we should be able to use cloning as a resource to stop extincion. oh and YEAH YAH!!!!!! GOT MONEY!!!

Cloning is pretty bad I guess, but would you like it if your favorite animal was becoming extinct because of humans? If people destroyed this animal, they need to think of a better way to help them back. Period.

this is true. i dont believe in human cloning, but saving endangered animals is completly fine. what would we do if we didnt have cows? no dairy products. what if we had no more corn plants? thats right, plants too. this is a completly seceptible and lively.

A dead, stuffed Liger? Wow, that sounds a little...I'm actually at a loss for words. Theresa brings up an interested idea. Breed before cloning. Although that too might be considered "playing God". It's hard to draw a clear line.

Perhaps to an extent. However, captive breeding should be tried first. There have been many instances that captive breeding has very successful in keeping a species from becoming extinct. One such species is the California Condor. My article about them should be published later today or tomorrow.
