Closer to Free

"Everybody wants to live how they wanna live, everybody wants to love like they wanna love, everybody wants to be - closer to free...." The lyrics from the Bodean's song "Closer to Free," say it all. We're all really looking for freedom - the peace and joy that come from living free from worry, poverty, fear.

Imagine having that balance in your life where you feel you have enough time, money and space to relax, enjoy your family, do satisfying work, maybe even make the world a better place. More and more people are achieving that balance, and their momentum will help the rest of us who are reaching for that goal.

My optimism springs from the shift in awareness that is happening everywhere I look. The next year shows great promise of bringing us closer to free. Next year Americans will have a new leader, who just may be the first African-American president. Even if that doesn't happen, this next year is one of amazing historic change. People are asking for change and believing it can happen. Many are now doing these things as a matter of course:

- Working from a collaborative business model rather than a competitive one
- Focusing on living a life of meaning and purpose
- Coaching and mentoring each other
- Resonating with ideas from quantum physics, the Secret, and spiritual leaders
- Sharing advice Making friends on social networking sites, through blogs and discussions
- Developing their bodies and minds through yoga, meditation and spiritual practices
- Reaching out to help in emergencies, such as those in New Orleans to Burma
- Realizing a connection with the Earth and the animals we share it with
- Making change happen, politically and personally
- Raising children who embody these values

All this is possible and accessible because of the Internet and our increased connection to each other. Not only has the web made information available, but constant access is shifting our consciousness from an inward focus to a global view. No matter that online connections are sometimes remote, with only a digital meeting place. We humans have an intrinsic need to create community.

This increased connection may feel overwhelming sometimes, but just as in real love, closeness can lead us to a fuller realization of ourselves. As the song says,

"Everybody needs to touch, you know now and then
And everybody wants a good good friend
Everybody wants to be
Closer to Free"
