It shows a vast amount of sexual misconduct and explicit sexual description.. but gives nothing to pessimistically ponder on in the end or anything to be optimistic about. You are only filled at its conclusion, with a deep seeded sentiment of betrayal.
That after spending 104 minutes watching it, you are shown deplorable images, both visual and mental, with out a meaningful reason. In its total essence, "Closer" is a story about four people who lack any moral conscience. The movie is a crash course in infidelity. All the characters begin in sadness and end in despondency. Then we have the credits.
The only thing worse than its visual content, is one main audible. "The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice, is a song, that becomes totally unbearable after hearing "I can't take my eyes off of you" sung 18 times in one play. The first listen was bad enough because of its massive repetition, but it was even worse hearing it once more, when reading the end credits.
For those who can tolerate only a mild amount of sexual explicitness, this movie is most surely not for you. It is filled not only with extensive Rated R. profanity and vulgarity, but it also holds physical as well as psychological nudity and sex acts.
In the end the direction of "Closer" and the solid acting of Owen and Portman, make it a movie that cant be called horrible.. in principle. Yet, I believe that a good film most times, is evaluated by the sum of its parts.
So, with this Mike Nichols' film, the fact that in the end it leaves you with a mind suffering from a detestable state, I can truly say that watching it will bring you closer.. to wanting to never see another movie about infidelity or sexual misconduct.. again.
If you seek to watch a movie that walks on a tight rope.. but does not fall and go splat on the floor.. you can view the Mike Nichols' film called "The Graduate". This is a film that has splendid acting, is very sexually filled, but that actually holds a satisfying ending.
