Closing Arguments Heard in Ricky Holland Case

Jurors Are Deliberating

Lansing, MI - Jurors are weighing the evidence in the case of Lisa Holland of Williamston, who is facing charges of first-degree child abuse and felony murder in the death of her 7-year-old adopted child, Ricky Holland.

Prosecutors have been trying to prove that Ricky's death occurred while Lisa Holland was committing first-degree child abuse. Whether they have proved it or not is now being deliberated.

If jurors believe that his death occurred while she was committing first-degree child abuse, they could find her guilty of first-degree murder. First-degree murder guarantees life in prison without the opportunity of parole.

If jurors believe that the prosecution hasn't proven their case that Lisa Holland was in the act of abusing him during his death, then they could come back with a verdict of second-degree murder, which means that she might someday walk free.

Of course, jurors could always find reasonable doubt that she is guilty of abusing or murdering him, and then she would be a free woman.

Such a large part of this case hinges on the testimony provided by her husband, Tim Holland. Tim pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for testifying against his wife at her trial. While he provided some truly damaging testimony, many people believe (and the defense is placing their bets on this) him to be untruthful. In the past he has lied to the police and others about Ricky's whereabouts.

No one knows how long deliberations will take in this case. Family, friends, neighbors, and strangers alike are all waiting for the verdict to come in.
