Closing Your Mary Kay Business

Monica Bullock
Mary Kay is a unique business opportunity for women but it's not for everyone. In time, you may decide to close your makeup business. To close the doors of your business properly, you'll need to tie up loose ends-with your director and your customers.

As a former Senior Sales Director with Mary Kay, I know a little something about recruiting. At least one every ten women I recruited quit within 3 months of opening her business. Some were open and upfront about their intentions; others just disappeared off the radar leaving Mary Kay leadership and their customers wondering, "What happened?"

It's understandable that some business owners keep their intentions to shut down close to their vest. If a Mary Kay franchise owner has significant inventory and decides to send it back, then the recruiter and director will lose their commission. Ultimately, it is the individual's choice and returning products for a 90% buy back is just one reason why your should close your Mary Kay business with excellence.

Here are few things you should do when closing your makeup business:

Talk to your customers. Customers cannot get Mary Kay in stores, only from licensed dealers. If you intend to quit, tell your customers. Show how classy you are by giving customers a few referrals they can contact to buy their products.

Speak to your team members. If you have taken the time to recruit team members, then tell them of your intentions. Team members join because of your inspiration. Make your departure without discouraging anyone, if possible. Chances are your team members are friends and family that joined MK to help you reach a goal or share the dream of owning a business with you. Respect their decision and be upfront about yours.

Call your recruiter or director. There is no denying it will be a tough phone call to make but in the end, you will feel better about your decision. Your plans to send back your product will affect your director's bottom line. It is just courteous to give a "heads up" so your director can prepare to care for your team.

Phone Mary Kay Headquarters. Sending back your inventory isn't as simple as stuffing things in a box and sending them on their way. You'll need to request a "buyback" form and package your return as described in the pamphlet. In a few weeks, you'll receive a repayment for the inventory and official paperwork releasing you from the company.

Mary Kay has a strict policy about returning after selling back your inventory-it's a no go! MK returns can't be resold, they have to be incinerated, leaving the company at a loss. Make sure that quitting is what you really want to do before sending back your goods.

Second chances may happen in life but not in Mary Kay.
