Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers

Nancy Clyne
Diapers for infants and babies are surely big business in North America. Disposable diapers are what many parents buy and there seems to be a large market for them. Nearly all parents feel that they are a good deal more convenient than cloth diapers. People find it easier to dispose of them then to have to throw them into the laundry and have to wash the diaper.

Actually disposable diapers have been around since the 1940s, however, they took some time to catch on. At this time they were very high-priced and most parents could not afford them. Besides, the early disposable diapers were simply one size which many times did not fit the baby, so they were less comfortable and often leaked worse than cloth diapers.

Disposable diapers became more popular In the 1950s, when companies started to offer them in assorted sizes, at this time they became more fashionable among the rich. It wasn't until the 1970s that the cost of disposable diapers dropped to the point where they became inexpensive enough for most people to afford. Parents very rapidly discovered how convenient they were and before long it was regarded old-fashioned, unfashionable and even unsanitary to use cloth diapers.

Throughout the generations disposable diapers have kept on improving, becoming lighter weight, more absorbent and also fitting better. Now there are even different styled diapers for boys and girls, they have been given cute patterns, and also diapers have become more environmentally friendly owed to customer demand.

At present there are today numerous large manufacturers, all claiming to produce the most dependable disposable diaper for your baby.

In the late 1990s and 2000s there's been a swing back towards cloth diapers. There is many reasons for this, and one of those reasons is the growing concern in the environment. Many folks are worried at the amount of garbage that is increasing. However, most people do not always think about the environmental cost of washing cloth diapers, and the electrical energy, detergent and water supply that it expends.

For those parents who are interested in using cloth diapers they have greatly improved in the last 50 years. The cotton now used in cloth diapers is treated so that it remains softer and is easier to wash than in years past. Cloth diapers now come in assorted colors and with attractive patterns. Most of the cloth diapers do not even require using pins anymore and now are secured with velcro or buttons.

An added advantage of cloth diapers is that toddlers who wear them will typically toilet train sooner since they can experience the unpleasantness of being wet in a cloth diaper. But then, a young infant in a cloth diaper is more apt to waken when they are wet for this same reason.

Many parents who use cloth diapers believe that they are also less chafing to the skin for babies, and as some infants and toddlers can tend to develop skin conditions like eczema, this may be a very crucial point for parents in selecting baby diapers.

It is nice to know that in this day and age parents have options. They can use either disposable or cloth diapers. They could even use cloth diapers when the baby is a newborn and use disposable when they are a toddler, or vice versus. What ever the parents feels best for their child.
