Though this is a more formal list of working attire; it will give you 20+ interchangeable outfit options. It will also offer professional styles to get you through the interview and for a period of time until you can fit other clothing and accessory items into your budget.
Suit
A smart fitting blazer and pants in a dark color is available at many retailers in an array of materials and is a solid combination when landing a new job. Depending on the suit's style, cut and fabric; some pants and jackets offer easy laundering options in comparison to dry cleaning.
Twin Set
This cardigan and shell combination goes a long way when it comes to work and play. The cardigan can make a strong impression when worn with the shell, over the shoulders or laid over your blazer. Unadorned or patternless twinsets will offer more options than a novelty cardigan set.
Collared Shirt
A well fitted collared shirt in short, long and sleeveless styles offer a multitude of options with other wardrobe pieces you already own. Look for styles that have darts or princess seams to be more form fitting. There are also a multitude of shirt styles with Peter Pan, butterfly and notch collars to create different necklines. If it's within your budget purchase at least two or three of the best fitting collared shirts to create several wardrobe ideas.
Skirt
Though this clothing item is sometimes problematic due to its length or cut; it's still a piece that compliments other clothing items. Skirts that are too short may send out the wrong signals so follow the rule that your skirt should be no shorter than where your hand naturally falls against your leg. If it is shorter then you may decide on a longer skirt.
Pumps
Choose a shoe in a dark color to accentuate your work clothing. For a wardrobe primarily made of neutral colors choose a dark pair of brown or whiskey color pumps to wear with your outfits. If your new job includes a considerable amount of time on your feet; opt for pumps with a heel between two and three inches.
Flat Style Shoes
Due to the popularity of flats there are thousands of styles designed with studs, grommets or zippers. If you prefer your flats to last longer choose a pair that is less trendy and go with a style that accentuates your foot. Gladiators, ballet, and loafers are not only sensible but offer comfort for the days you'll be on your feet and be sure to ask if open-toe-shoes are appropriate beforehand.
Camisole
This simple wardrobe accessory comes in thin strap, wide strap, square neck, scoop neck, lace and other style options. Choose the best style, cut and color and make it part of your Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring attire.
Vest
Depending on your personal style the vest is a piece of clothing that is considerably dressy or extremely casual. Vests purchased with your blazer will most likely match but if you're looking for a change of pace opt for denim or corduroy. Some vests offer seams and darts to reduce boxiness while others are designed with velvet piping.
T-Shirt
Although every mom has a drawer full of t-shirts it's still important to have a few that are unstained and fit well for casual days at the office. Shirts that are made with spandex and cotton or lycra and cotton blends hold shape much better than 100% cotton T's.
Trouser Style Jeans
Jeans have become common place in many office jobs but keeping a level of professionalism is still important. There are many styles and cuts available but the trouser style jean has a dressier cut than other styles. If this style of jean does not work for you pick a style that fits you best in a dark indigo.
Outerwear
Your choice of outer wear will depend on the climate you live in. The choices are limitless with double breasted, pea coat, trench styles and more. Regardless; if you'd prefer a trendier alternative the most important aspect should be that it fits well and keeps you warm.

passing this on to my girlfriend. :) jeffrey
Great article! I'm actually a back-to-work mom. :) I have been on maternity leave for the past 12 months, and now I'm back to work. :) I dress the same way I used to before my maternity leave, just respecting the same dress code from my company. :)
