Clothing Your Children Without Baring Your Wallet

Let's face the facts; children can go through some clothes. If you're lucky, they will just outgrow them. It seems they do that faster than you buy clothes for them. Of course, everyone wants their kids to look presentable in their attire. But, how do you keep your children well dressed and not break the bank? Here are some helpful tips to help you along.

Your first stop on your money saving shopping trip could be at a local consignment shop or Goodwill store. There you'll find gently used clothing at tremendous savings. These stores are generally well stocked with various sizes of just about any garment you're looking for. And the prices are usually just pennies on the dollar compared to purchasing the same item brand new. While you're there, you could donate some of the clothes your children have outgrown and someone else can get the same great deal you're getting. Some of the consignment stores will have auctions as well to really multiply your savings.

In times of warmer weather, another great savings option is yard sales and garage sales. Look through your local newspaper's classified ads on Friday and you should be able to find enough yard sales to keep you busy most of the day on Saturday. Generally, the listings will give you a description of what they have to sell. Visit those that list children's clothing and see what deals you can get. A pair of jeans might be marked one dollar, but if you haggle a little, you might get them for a quarter! And let's not forget about your local flea market. It's nothing more than a great big yard sale, isn't it?

Next, why not consider shopping online? Internet auction sites and web stores are a great place to find good deals on children's clothing. Make sure you read the listings carefully for the correct sizes, though, and if the listing seems too vague to you, move on to the next one or ask the seller a question about the item. You don't want to buy a pair of jeans or a dress that's too small. You should also pay close attention to the seller's payment and shipping details. It may seem like you're saving money until the shipping fees are added on.

And lastly, of course, there are the retail outlets for new clothing and shoes. Before you go shopping, read the sales circulars in the Sunday newspaper. You'll find out which outlet is having the best sale on the clothes you need to buy and maybe find a couple of coupons to carry along with you as well. Seasonal clearance sales are always the best chances to save a few dollars. Keep in mind, though, to think ahead when buying end of season items. For example, if you're buying boys shorts at the end of summer, you might want to buy them a size bigger so he can grow into them by the time warmer weather rolls around again.

Spending money on children's clothing doesn't have to be stressful on the pocketbook if you'll just remember not to put all of your eggs in one basket. We all want our children to look their best and save money at the same time. By doing a little research, you can find some great deals and still afford to take the kids out for an ice cream cone when the shopping day is finished.
