Clover: Myths and Superstitions

Cheryl Dennett
Clover can be found in almost every yard. And, it is not uncommon to see children searching for four-leaf clovers on their hands and knees. And, if you live in the country, there are fields full of clover. Here are some stories about clover that you may or may not have heard.

Most people have heard that it is lucky to find a four-leaf clover. It is also believed that the person who finds this lucky clover will meet their future lover on that same day. If the clover is given to another person immediately after finding it, the finder's luck will double. It is also believed that the four leaves of the lucky talisman have meaning. Each of the leaves has a different meaning and they are fame, wealth, a faithful lover and good health.

It has been said that clover will only grow where a mare has foaled. If you are looking for a charm against witchcraft, the four-leaf clover is what you need. Young men who do not wish to be drafted should carry this good luck charm with them to avoid conscription. If a young woman wants to find out who she will marry, she has but to put a two-leaf clover in her right shoe. The first man she meets will be her future husband, or a man with the same name. It seems that luck is not an exact science.

Another belief is that anyone who is wearing a four-leaf clover will be able to see fairies. Five-leaf clovers bring about mixed messages. Some say they guarantee great riches. Others have been known to say they threaten illness if you do not give them away immediately.

Stories about clover have been told since biblical times. There is a legend of Eve stealing some clover as she was being expelled from Paradise. This is where some think the plant got it's magical abilities concerning luck. Some herbalists say that if you use clover in remedies, it can help with the treatment of many different skin problems.

Whether you believe in the magic, or not, it is still fun to try and find lucky four-leaf clovers in a patch in your yard. Be careful, though, you may find a bee that is busy collecting pollen and nectar from the flowers. But, they probably will not bother you if you do not bother them. Humans are not the only creatures attracted to the clover plant.
