"Cloverfield"
Hundreds of movie goers this past weekend who went to enjoy the live action remake of Transformers, were shocked by the teaser trailer for the top secret J. J. Abrams horror movie project. Not much is known about this project other than the code name "cloverfield" and the brief glimpse movie goers got this weekend. This is the first time in a long time that a preview has gotten more hype than the movie it proceeded, but with the breathtaking scenes depicted in the trailer, more people left the theater remembering the last thing the trailer showed them, 1-18-08.
What is "Cloverfield"?
Not much is known yet about this secret project, even the production company, Bad Robot, denies any knowledge of the project or the teaser. Fans were shocked with the scenes they were presented. Apparently, the movie revolves around a monster, called The Plague, attacking New York. With scenes depicting buildings exploding and the severed head of the Statue of Liberty bounding down a street, one thing is for sure, the special effects for the project are bound to be top notch.
With a current filming budget of $30 million, and rumors of filming not even have started yet, many people wonder how J. J. Abrams can meet the apparent announced release date of January 18th of 2008. From the teaser, it appears that the film will be shot in a Blair Witch Project-esque style with hand held cameras, making it appear that it is being filmed by those experiencing what is going on.
The film is being penned by Drew Goddard who worked with Abrams as a producer on Lost. Also, the film is being directed by Matt Reeves. The films cast is mostly made up of little known actors and actresses such as Blake Lively, Mike Vogel, Lizzy Caplan, and Micheal Stahl-David. Both Lively and Vogel have worked together in the past, on the film, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
The hype
The hype caused by the teaser caused hundreds to hit the internet to find out everything they could about the project. A few websites have been apparently set up for the movie. www.ethanhaaswasright.com, www.ethanhaaswaswrong.com, and www.1-18-08.com all seem to point news seekers towards what may be going on in the film. ethanhaaswasright.com seems to be a game of sorts with several puzzles for visitors to solve to be treated to video clues and information about the movie. ethanhaaswaswrong.com is a blog seemingly created to discourage people from paying attention to what is on the prior site and to discredit the other site.1-18-08.com only offers a few photos of scenes from the teaser with the time stamp of 1-18-08.
What can be expected
One thing is for sure, J. J. Abrams has had some great success in the past with his television series Lost. With Abrams at the helm, this movie is bound to be a great movie with exceptional special effects and interesting filming style. This should definitely be at the top of any movie goers lists of movies to see.
