Parents, including myself, are searching for sites that don't have all the pop up ads and could possibly be, virtually, predator free. As a parent, I am searching for websites that will enhance my child's online experiences in healthy ways without all the garbage because our children now days are exposed to so much already. I remember when I was 11. I was busy playing softball, riding a bike or simply hanging out with friends. Now it is virtual friend's kids are finding cool and collecting friends from all over the nation. It is a different generation, one that requires so many more precautions and stress on the parent's behalf.
Pre-teens are not permitted to be on the teen popular Myspace. Although, most of these kids are finding ways around it by lying about their age to create profiles, so they too can be apart of the myspace craze connecting with friends!
As a parent, you should never totally let your guard down on any website your child interacts with, but rest assured there are some websites offered for our kids that are set up for safety!
New Horizon Interactive has created a site parents will be happy to get kids involved in. New Horizon Interactive has set out to make a safe place for kids because the creators wanted a safe internet place for their own children. So they understand the precautions and safety worries, we, as parents have when our children are on the net! New Horizon Interactive did extensive research and put ClubPenguin.com together for children. They stayed focused on three main criteria's; Fun, Safety and Service.
In 2006, CLUBPENGUIN.COM, won the Better Business Bureau's Online Kids Privacy Seal of Approval for its loaded safety features and won "Editors Choice Award" from the Children's Technology Review Magazine.
The penguin animated world is aimed for children ages 6-14 years old, but is open to children of all ages. Anyone 18 and older receives a penguin with a cane to show an older participant. There is a $5.95 monthly fee that keeps the site ad free. There are a few sections on clubpenguin that children can to play for free. Another added bonus; there is nothing to download on the computer for gaming or chatting!
ClubPenguin allows kids to make their own virtual homes, create a character or an avatar, play games, send greeting cards, explore identities, chatting and hanging out with friends in an online community made just for them.
Kids earn coins as they play games and help other members. These coins can be used to purchase things for their igloo's and clothing items for their penguins.
Kids socialize using creative thought patterns as they communicate with other ClubPenguin members. They even hold contest in the virtual community newspaper. This site promotes creative writing and communication skills for youngsters, as well as creative thinking and language as they express themselves.
Youngsters using safe chat mode are only allowed to converse using prescripted lines and emotion icons. Conversations are monitored by online filters and staff twenty four hour a day. Regular chat mode runs through the filtering dictionary and is heavily monitored by staff.
My Son, age 11 enjoys ClubPenguin's games and profile builder and I enjoy the safety. But, like most parent's, I always check on my children when they use the computer more for my own sake and rest assurance that they are safe and using the web wisely while enjoying gaming and chatting.
