CNN Vs. Ashton Kutcher on Twitter

Ashton Kutcher Takes on CNN in the Twitter 1 Million Follower Challenge

Colleen Starr
The race between CNN and Ashton Kutcher to reach 1 million followers is over. What many people thought was impossible has now happened. One man, Ashton Kutcher, has taken over and has a bigger voice on Twitter than CNN. At approximately 2am eastern time Ashton Kutcher reached his 1 millionth and CNN conceded and congratulated Ashton. The world followed the race with CNN updates and on the website chartbeat. CNN took to the television airways to broadcast their fight to get a million Twitter followers. Ashton Kutcher does not run a huge media network so he did the next best thing, he broadcasted live on the internet. If you missed Ashton Kutcher broadcast you can watch it here.

Larry King made a Youtube video directed at Ashton a few days ago. He asked Ashton Kutcher in the video "Do you think you can take on an entire network? Do you know who CNN is? Your playing out of your field. CNN will bury you" You can watch Larry King's Youtube video here. Many of the CNN anchors discussed on their broadcast about the Twitter race. They almost were laughing at the thought of Ashton beating CNN.

Ashton Kutcher won the Twitter race now what?
Ashton Kutcher will now donate 10,000 mosquito nets to Malaria no more. He has promised to ding dong ditch Ted Turner's house when he comes to Atlanta. He has promised his Twitter followers he will video tape the whole incident. Ashton Kutcher's lucky 1 millionth follower gets to be a character in the upcoming Sims 3 game by EA. EA games will also give the lucky follower every game they make in 2009 for the video game system of their choice. EA games is also giving prizes to other followers of Ashton's. CNN is also donating mosquito nets to Malaria no more organization. We can expect to see Larry King on Ashton's Twitter show on ustream. He has promised to take questions to ask Larry King directly from his Twitter followers. Ashton Kutcher is also taping an appearance on the Oprah show discussing his battle with CNN and what social media means to the future.

Social media sites like Twitter are becoming a huge influence in our society. Anyone can post questions, pictures and thoughts and receive comments back from all over the world. When a news story breaks you may see it on Twitter before you see it on TV. Everyone can have a voice and influence on social media sites. On Twitter you can easily choose who to follow or not follow. You decide on what you hear and from whom. A regular person like myself has had the great opportunity to converse with Ann Curry through Twitter. I can count myself as one of the few people on Twitter Ann Curry actually follows.

I recently felt the power of Twitter. I found a very large Florida soft shell turtle swimming in my pool and did not know how to remove him. I called the Florida fish and wildlife agency and was given a number for a trapper. While I waited for the trapper to call me back I posted on Twitter about the turtle. Within minutes of my posting I had people from all over the world offering me suggestions on how to safely remove him. Sure saving a turtle from my pool was not national news but, my Twitter friends were there to help.

I'll be "Tweeting" the entire house healthcare bill to bring awareness to the 1017 page monstrosity.

Uh-oh! There's more to Kutcher's Twitter triumph. Aside from the fact he isn't an "average person", he had corporate help. A news reporter said that CNN was in on it too in a roundabout way. At least it benefited a charitable cause. Those mosquito nets are a life-saving necessity that many families simply cannot afford.

Personally, I'm bored with this celebritytweet thing; that and the #herebeforeoprah fiasco. People are lame on both sides of the fence.
